North Tenerife vs South Tenerife: Which Is Best?
One of the biggest decisions when planning a trip to Tenerife is whether to stay in the north or the south of the island. Many people don’t realise just how different the two areas are — in landscape, weather, culture and overall atmosphere.
Tenerife is often described as “two islands in one”. The south is known for sunshine, beaches and large resorts, while the north is greener, more traditional and more connected to the island’s history and culture.
Neither is better or worse — it simply depends on what kind of holiday you want. This guide will help you understand the real differences between north Tenerife and south Tenerife so you can decide which part of the island is best for you.
Weather: North Tenerife vs South Tenerife
The biggest difference between north and south Tenerife is the weather, and this is due to the island’s geography and the trade winds. Mount Teide and the central mountain range divide the island in two, creating completely different microclimates.
The north of Tenerife is greener and more humid because it is exposed to the trade winds. These winds bring moisture, which creates the island’s laurel forests, banana plantations and the famous “sea of clouds” often seen in the Orotava Valley.
The south of Tenerife is drier and sunnier, with more desert-like landscapes and fewer green areas. This is why most of the large beach resorts were built in the south.
However, the weather is not always as simple as “north cloudy, south sunny”. In recent years, the weather has become more unpredictable, and there are now many days when the south is cloudy while the north is clear. Sometimes the weather can be completely different just a few kilometres away.
If you want to understand this better, it helps to read about the island’s microclimates and trade winds, which explain why Tenerife’s landscapes are so varied.
Landscape and Scenery
The landscapes of north and south Tenerife are very different.
The north is known for its green valleys, historic towns, botanical gardens, old streets and traditional Canarian architecture. This is where you will find places like Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava and many of the island’s historic estates and gardens.
The south is more developed for tourism, with large hotels, beaches, shopping centres and nightlife areas such as Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas.
Both areas have beautiful scenery, but they are very different types of scenery. The north feels more natural, historic and cultural, while the south feels more like a classic beach holiday destination.

Towns vs Resorts: A Different Atmosphere
Another important difference between north and south Tenerife is the atmosphere of the towns.
Many areas in the south were built specifically for tourism, so they are made up mainly of hotels, apartment complexes, beaches, bars and shopping centres. They are busy, lively and designed for holidaymakers.
In the north, towns like Puerto de la Cruz grew naturally over centuries around a harbour, a church, and a main square. Places like Plaza del Charco, the old fishing port, and the historic streets give the town a very different feel to a purpose-built resort.
For travellers who enjoy walking around a town, sitting in cafés, visiting gardens, and exploring local restaurants, the north often feels more relaxed and easier to explore without a car.
North or South Tenerife for Solo Travellers?
This depends very much on the type of trip you want. Some solo travellers prefer large resorts where everything is in one place, while others prefer smaller towns where they can explore on foot and experience more of the local culture.
Areas like Puerto de la Cruz are often popular with solo travellers because the town is walkable, there are plenty of cafés and restaurants, and there is always somewhere to go without needing to plan too much in advance.

Culture, History and Local Life
If you are interested in the history and culture of Tenerife, the north is particularly important. Puerto de la Cruz was one of the first tourist destinations in the Canary Islands, and many British visitors came here in the 19th century for health tourism.
This history is still visible today in places like the Botanical Gardens, Sitio Litre Garden, old hotels such as the Gran Hotel Taoro, and many historic houses and gardens around the Orotava Valley.
The north also has many traditional restaurants, local festivals and historic towns, which can give visitors a very different impression of Tenerife compared to the resort areas in the south.

So Which Part of Tenerife Is Best?
There is no single “best” part of Tenerife — it depends on what kind of holiday you want.
- If you want beaches, guaranteed sunshine and resort hotels, the south may suit you best.
- If you want culture, gardens, scenery, history and a more traditional town atmosphere, the north may suit you better.
- If you enjoy walking around towns, visiting cafés, gardens and historic places, and taking guided trips into the mountains and historic towns, many people find the north more interesting and varied.
Many visitors who first come to Tenerife for a beach holiday in the south later discover the north and realise it offers a completely different side of the island.
